Picking the Right Partners for Youth BJJ Practice

If you’re coaching a youth BJJ practice, it’s important to understand how to properly pair your students. In order to have an effective practice session, you need to consider three key elements when selecting partners: size, skill, and temperament. It’s essential that everyone is comfortable and able to learn and grow in their skills while avoiding any potential risks of injury or frustration. Let’s take a closer look at each of these considerations.

Size Matters

When it comes to pairing partners for youth BJJ practice, size matters—you don’t want too much of a discrepancy between partners. Too big of a gap can lead to injuries or one partner feeling frustrated by their lack of success against the other. However, this doesn’t mean that smaller kids shouldn’t get paired with larger ones; instead, coaches should strive for the most even matchups possible so that both partners can experience success during practice sessions.

Skill Is Key

In addition to size, skill is another important factor when pairing BJJ partners. Coaches should strive for relatively even matchups so that students can challenge themselves without becoming overwhelmed or frustrated by their partner's superior skillset. This allows everyone to learn and grow as they develop their own techniques and strategies while also learning from their partner's successes.

Temperament Matters Too

Finally, coaches should also consider each student's temperament when making matches. For instance, try pairing high-energy kids with each other so they can have fun together without overwhelming more timid students who may be intimidated by the intensity of their enthusiasm. Doing this ensures that all students feel comfortable during practices without ever feeling shell-shocked in training sessions due to mismatched energy levels between partners.

When it comes to running an effective youth BJJ practice, it’s essential that coaches take into account three key factors when selecting partners: size, skill level and temperament. By doing this, you can ensure that all participants are comfortable and able to learn from one another during practice sessions without anyone feeling overwhelmed or risking injury due to discrepancies in size or skill level between partners. With careful consideration of these three elements, coaches will be able set up the best possible scenarios for their students' success and growth in BJJ skillsets!
